Puron Q & A:

Q.
Is the refrigerant in my home heating & cooling system really changing?
A. Yes, by law, the refrigerant in your home's cooling system is changing just as the refrigerant in you car had to be changed a few years ago.

Q. Why?
A. Currently, the refrigerant in your home contains HCFC's, including the chlorine based, ozone depleting gas that is known as R-22. The 1990 Clean Air Act mandates the complete phase-out of all HCFC refrigerants and the equipment using them by 2010.

Q. 2010 is a long way away; can't I continue with using R-22 today?
A. You could, but consider that the EPA has put a cap on the amount of R-22 that can be produced and we will be close to this cap this year. The amount of R-22 that can be manufactured is drastically reduced (35%) by 2004. The average life expectancy of heating and cooling systems is 8-20 years depending on the particular equipment. Imagine the cost of replacing the refrigerant and paying for R-22 system repairs in ten to fifteen years.

Q. What is the replacement refrigerant?
A. R-410A is the refrigerant being used by most all the major manufacturers. Carrier had trademarked theirs Puron. Carrier has had their Puron systems in operation for six years and the compressor manufacturer has stated that the Carrier TXA Puron unit is the most reliable unit they have tested to date.

Q. What are the advantages of Puron?
A. Puron is the most reliable indoor weather system ever manufactured by Carrier, who invented air conditioning in 1902 and continues to be the world's leading manufacturer of heating and cooling products in the world. In addition, the Puron units are ozone-friendly, chlorine-free and the quietest unit made by Carrier today. In addition, if your current system is older than 10 years old, you could realize savings on your utility bills of up to 40-50%!

Q. How significant will be the price increase on R-22 in the future?
A. Judging from the R-12 data from the automobile experiences the pricing of R-22 systems repair and cost refrigerants will increase dramatically. The charts on the next page illustrate the HCFC phase-out schedule and the pricing effect that occurred in R-12 pricing. Now is the time to think about Puron and all the advantages both immediately and for the long term.
